1. Harvard University, Cambridge, MA – Getting first by a large margin is the famous Harvard University. Established in 1782, Harvard Medical School has a long story of success. Being the third oldest medical school in America means a lot. The Medical School has many notable alumni, including former CEO of American Red Cross, Bernadine Healy.


2. University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA – Number two on the list is the University of Pennsylvania. Established in 1765, Penn Med is older than Harvard Medical School. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, The Medical School started programs for developing medical specialties such as neurosurgery. Penn Med has served as the medical college for two Nobel Medicine Prize winners as well.


3. John Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD – Coming in a close third place is John Hopkins School of Medicine, which is currently a widely recognized medical program. Ever since being founded in 1893, this school has set the standards for other medical programs. For example, it was the first medical school to require an undergraduate degree and the first to accept women without any bias. Despite being third on this list, the John Hopkins School of Medicine is first in the amount of research grants it has received from the National Institutes of Health. 18 Noble Prize winners in either Medicine or Chemistry have graduated from John Hopkins School of Medicine.


4. University of California – San Francisco, San Francisco, CA – Tied for fourth place in Medical Research rankings is the University Of California San Francisco School Of Medicine. UCSF Medical School is the only medical school to rank in the top 10 in both research and primary care. What makes this school so unique is that students from California get to go here for free. Even then, out-of-state students attend here for a cost that is around a fourth of private medical programs, like the other four.

4. Washington University in St. Louis, St. Louis, MO – The other fourth place is Washington University in St. Louis, a well respected graduate medical program. This medical program has been in the top 10 every single year since the rankings have been published. Founded in 1891, Washington University in St. Louis has had some great success due to its faculty. 17 Noble laureates have been part of the faculty at Washington University in St. Louis.
